Meet Sonya
30-year resident of Olean - Proud Olean City School District Parent - Addiction Recovery and Mental Health nurse for over 30 years - Adjunct Professor at St. Bonaventure University
I feel blessed to have lived, worked, and raised my children in Olean. My husband, Martin, and I have been married for 25 years. Our children attended and graduated from Olean High School. I have been employed as as a home health nurse through the VNA for the past 5 years. Prior to the VNA I was employed as the Associate Director for the Council on Addiction Recovery Services for 28 years and worked as a psychiatric nurse on the OGH Behavioral Health Unit. I have been an Adjunct Professor at St. Bonaventure University in the Sociology Department for the past 20 years.
I have a strong background in the development and management of budgets in a fiscally responsible manner. I have had the opportunity to collaborate with many local agencies to identify and develop programs to meet the needs of the residents of Olean. I believe there are no insurmountable problems if we work together, seek creative and focus on the needs of those we serve.
I believe that transparency and accountability in government and politics is a must. As your Alderman, I would work diligently to represent all members of Ward 4 and work with other representatives to address the evolving needs of our city. Our city needs to develop a comprehensive plan for how we are going to support existing business, so that we do not lose additional jobs, while focusing on how to bring new business to Olean. We need to work to keep our existing resident base and attract new residents to Olean. I envision Olean as a safe city with jobs that pay a living wage, with affordable housing and activities that make our community vibrant. In addition to this, we need to have taxes that are affordable for everyone while maintaining our vital services.
Since being elected to the Olean City Council in 2021, I have worked diligently to ensure all of my constituents have a voice in city government. I've also worked with my colleagues on the council to ensure that Olean works for all of our residents. I am now seeking re-election to the Common Council in 2023 and would be honored to have your support.
